A week off couldn't come at a better time for Chandler Basha.

It saved its bye week for the final week of the regular season, and will be able to heal up, clean up and psyche itself up for the Open Division playoffs in three weeks after beating visiting Mesa Mountain View 44-30 on Friday night in a 6A football game.

The Bears completed a 10-0 regular season -- the first in school history -- behind the brilliance of sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr., sophomore all-everything Miles Lockhart and sophomore receiver Bryson Dedmon.

"We've been going for 16 straight weeks," Basha coach Chis McDonald said. "It's taxing. We played sloppy. I'm not happy about that. But we're section champs. We're 10-0. These kids deserved it.

"But we've got some things to clean up, obviously."

For Mountain View (7-2), in its first year under one of its greatest alums, Joe Germaine, it can look forward to being a 6A playoff team that might have a chance to go deep.

The defense will need to tighten up. Losing defensive end Malaki Ta'ase to knee injury last week is a big blow. But the offense continues to impress with sophomore Jack Germaine at quarterback, the offensive line jelling and creating space for diminutive running back Aiden Damiani and Power 5 recruited junior tight end Jackson Bowers being used the way he was in the second half against Basha.

Bowers snared a Germaine 32-yard pass in the end zone over a defender. He made a great catch for a 50-yard gain that led to a Damiani 2-yard touchdown.

But Basha built a big lead behind Williams and his playmakers.

"He ran the offense really well tonight, he executed, he put the ball where the defense wasn't," McDonald said. "He was a point guard tonight, distributing the football."

And when the Toros had Basha's fast receivers covered, Williams followed blockers for big gains.

Williams hit Dedmon with a 57-yard scoring pass after Mountain View had taken a 3-0 lead to open the game.
